According to a study published in the journal Science Advances, short-term memory problems can be improved by using laser light therapy. In the study, the researchers applied transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) treatment to the cortex area of the brain.

The study enrolled 90 male and female participants aged between 18 and 25. Participants in the study were treated with laser light at wavelengths of 1064 nm to the right prefrontal cortex, while others were treated at a shorter wavelength or treatment was delivered to the left prefrontal cortex. After tPBM treatment for 12 minutes, the participants were asked to remember the orientations or colors of a set of items displayed on a screen.

The findings of the study showed that the participants treated with laser light to the right prefrontal cortex at 1064 nm showed clear improvements in memory over those who had received the other treatments. On the other hand, participants who received other treatment variations were able to remember between 3 and 4 of the test objects, and those with the targeted treatment were able to recall between 4 and 5 objects.

Additionally, data from the electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring during the experiment showed changes in brain activity that also predicted improvements in the memory performance.
